Don’t Hold Back; Be Like Sydney

There are plenty of people around you who will tell you what you can’t do. Don’t be one of them. Your job is to prove them wrong.

I know it sounds cliché to suggest that you chase after your dreams, but I’m dead serious about this. If you don’t go after them, no one else will do it for you.

Okay. So there’s the direct message I want you to hear, but sometimes a story or illustration helps a point sink in, so I’ll tell you about Sydney, my brother’s crazy dog. I want you to be like Sydney today.

First of all, Sydney is a pain in the ass. I love the dog, but that’s the truth. He is always on the move, getting into things, and looking for his chance at freedom. As soon as he sees it, he’s gone! And he doesn’t care if you have other things to do or places to be rather than trying to track him down. You can chase after him or you can go about your other plans. It’s all the same to him. He’ll come back when he’s damned good and ready.

Sydney doesn’t concern himself with your convenience or the boundaries within which you’d like to place him. A leash is meant for chewing through, a fence for digging under, and an open front door is absolutely an invitation to freedom!

I have to say I kind of love him for it, in spite of the irritation he causes when I would rather he just stay inside. I can see the joy on his face when he tears off down the street. Even when I’m yelling obscenities at him, I can’t help but admire his spirit.

Honestly, I feel the same way about people who refuse to be held back, who decide to live life on their own terms. They are inspiring, even when their refusal to follow convention causes me anxiety.

So go ahead. Be like Sydney. Go out there and at least try to do your thing. Chase after it with the passion of a wild animal who refuses to be too domesticated. If you don’t, others will be more than happy to let you live your entire life boxed in or tied to a leash. Does that sound fun?
